Best Of The Best

by Doktor Andy on April 4, 2011 at 8:45 pm

Andy says:

I think we can all agree that this is, by far, my best art work on a comic yet.  I also think this is one of Charlie’s best scripts.  I had a blast drawing this with all the solid blacks and gothic horror, and you can really see my style starting to take shape.  And how about that dead priest in the casket, huh?!  I just can’t get enough of that guy.  (Disclaimer: Charlie did not write him as a priest, I made that decision.  Address hate mail accordingly.)

I hope you will notice the contrast in my ability to draw women between this comic and the last one.  The secret?  I spent a lot of time staring at women.  A lot of time.  Restraining order amounts of time…

Heads up to everyone that the next comic may take me a while.  It’s pretty jam packed and is based on a concept I came up with that Charlie fleshed out.  It will be a full five pager.  I’m hoping to have it up in two months, give or take, but no promisses with this one.

Please keep tweeting and FaceBooking about the comic! (Have you spotted the handy “share” box at the bottom of the posts yet?  The share box questions its self worth if you don’t use it.)  If you’re on Twitter or FaceBook you can keep up with us on there as well!  I sometimes put out a call for sketch ideas on Twitter, which has resulted in me sketching some weird stuff.

Charlie says:

This comic represents my attempt to condense my writing into two pages or less. Usually I go long, since I’m most comfortable writing novels. There is something to be said about brevity, however, and I’m happy with the pacing here. I don’t think the story would work as well at three pages or more – the length fits the piece.

This piece also represents my first attempt at doing a layout. Technically, I did the layout from “Femme Fatale” as well, but I added that after I had finished the script for this one. As I get used to the nuances of the comic page, we’ll probably get to doing some creative stuff with layouts, as long as it fits the story.

Next comic is Andy and I attempting to do something in the vein of The Twilight Zone in space. We have some other fun stuff beyond that, too. I’m personally hoping to do a comic eventually that doesn’t include narrative boxes, to try and get myself out of the prose writing mentality and focus more on what you can do with a visual medium like a comic. In the meanwhile, it looks like I’ll be supplying some short fiction here and there between updates…well, unless I want to see if Andy will actually go through with his threat of beating me in the crotch with a knotted rope for shirking my responsibilities.

Lovecraftian Doodles

I have been drawing, just not very much.  At some point I’ll finish the current comic I was working on, but not right now.  Right now is for reading more Lovecraft and spending time with family and friends.

Fiction Feature: A NaNoWriMo Preview

by Charlie on October 31, 2011 at 2:45 pm
Posted In: Blog

November is National Novel Writing Month, or NaNoWriMo. The goal is to write a total of 50,000 words – the length of a short novel – in 30 days, resisting the urge to go back and edit material until you’re done. I’ve participated since 2004 – in fact, my novel Shadowslayers began as a NaNoWriMo story. But this year I have a new child at home and don’t have as much time to sit down and work on a new story. So I’m cheating a bit.

For the past couple of years, I’ve been working on and off on a novel called 21 Faces. It’s some of the best stuff I’ve written, but it’s taking forever to get done. With the book almost halfway finished, my goal is to actually get it wrapped up during NaNoWriMo. And to get me in the mood to undertake this project, and because it is some of my best work, here’s the first chapter of what will hopefully be coming soon to bookstores near you.

(Fun fact: I read this opening chapter at a book talk I did a while ago, with the target mostly middle-aged women. The reaction was surprisingly good.)

Fiction Feature: A Slice of Death

by Charlie on September 27, 2011 at 12:00 pm
Posted In: Blog

Here’s the newest Fiction Feature. This time it’s a short bit called “A Slice of Death.” The goal in writing it was to focus on just language and narrative, straddling the line between a short story and a prose poem.

Anyone keeping score might note that one of my previous offerings, “Foundling,” has disappeared recently. That’s because it’s been accepted for publication in “Aoife’s Kiss.” No, I do not plan to continue poaching the Fiction features for publication, but sometimes the fit for print is pretty much perfect.

And since I’m chattering about stuff of mine that’s been published, you can head on over to Toasted Cheese to find another short story of mine, “Posthumous,” which ran in the September issue.

Without further ado, here’s “A Slice of Death.”

Sketch Friday: Metaluna Mutant

by Doktor Andy on September 2, 2011 at 8:42 am
Posted In: Blog

This is my take on a Metaluna Mutant, from the enjoyable Sci-Fi B-Movie This Island Earth, or the much more enjoyable MST3K: The Movie.

Ah, This Island Earth, made way back in 1955.  A time when every Sci-Fi movie poster had to feature a creature of some sort carrying an unconscious dame across the threshold of the future.  I love old Sci-Fi.

Fiction Feature: The Adventures of Wonder Dan!

by Charlie on August 30, 2011 at 1:50 pm
Posted In: Blog

I’m a bit late on the Fiction Feature thanks to a multitude of real-life things going on that pull me away from the Internet. Fiction-wise, I’m in the middle or a novel, which is taking a lot of my creative energies. Luckily, I have an archive of previously-written short stories. This is a story that I’m proud of in my own way, despite the fact that it is too weird and wacky to really find publication here. My wife Sarah wrote her own version of this story using the same first line but then going elsewhere. Maybe in the future I’ll post her version of the story as well.
