Sketch Friday: a Chud and a T-Rex

by Doktor Andy on May 13, 2011 at 7:00 am
Posted In: Blog

Last week I had the pleasure of playing the Call of Cthulhu Roleplaying Game with some friends.  Although I love Lovecraft and enjoy roleplaying, I’d never had a chance to play this before.  I had a lot of fun.  My character was Professor Artemus Dandridge, professor of Esoteric Studies at Miskatonic University.  Apart from being quite intelligent he was a complete CHUD!  In the “appearance” ranking of the game an average physical appearance is a 10… the good professor was a 5.  I did a quick sketch on my character sheet to illustrate his features to my fellow players, but this week I did a proper illustration.  The stars above him are the Pleiades, which factored heavily in the one-shot game we were playing.

Additionally, I saw on Twitter yesterday that it was “International Draw a T-Rex Day.”  I have no idea if such a day actually exists in any capacity, but that was enough excuse for me.  I did this quick 15 minute sketch.  The perspective on the head is a bit off, but it came out much better than I’d expected, so I’m happy.

Sketch Friday: Hydra Waitress

by Doktor Andy on May 6, 2011 at 7:00 am
Posted In: Blog

Why do people join HYDRA?  I’ll tell you why.  It’s the waitresses.

This hottie is based on the design done by Hickman & Caselli for Secret Warriors #11.  If you don’t read Secret Warriors you should.  It’s awesome.  Go buy the first trade!!!

As always with my ladies, her feet look like crap.  But at least she doesn’t look like she has some horrible disease or deformity.  I’m looking at you, Liefeld!

Yeah, that’s right.  I claim to now draw better than Rob Liefeld.  Prove I’m wrong.

Sketch Friday: Lovecraftian Watercolor

by Doktor Andy on April 29, 2011 at 7:00 am

“With him he bore the subject of his visit, a grotesque, repulsive, and apparently very ancient stone statuette whose origin he was at a loss to determine.”

- The Call of Cthulhu by H.P. Lovecraft

Pretty rough as watercolors go, but considering this is only my second ever and I didn’t do any pencils beforehand (I just let Cthulhu guide me), I think it’s pretty decent.  The foot kind of got away from me there though…

My favorite part is how I was able to give the wing a membrane look.

So my watercolor technique is coming along, but I still have a LONG way to go.

Sketch Friday: Disconnected Teaser

by Doktor Andy on April 22, 2011 at 7:00 am
Posted In: Blog

Okay, so this isn’t really a “sketch.”  Well, it is depending on what you think of the quality of my artwork :-p

This is a teaser for the comic I’m currently illustrating, which I’m hoping will be up sometime early June.  It’s a packed 5-pager with some interesting coloring.  This panel is a work in progress as the finished panel would give some story away.

What horror does our intrepid astronaut see out the window?!

Disconnected is a much more serious story than we have done before, and is something of a sci-fi horror.  It is also the first time Charlie and I have developed a story concept together, which was fun.  I hope you folks like it!

Let me know if you like or dislike seeing teasers like this.

Sketch Friday: 10 minute Spider-Man

by Doktor Andy on April 15, 2011 at 7:00 am
Posted In: Blog

I had a theory that Spider-Man was really easy to draw.  I spent just under 10 minutes doing this week’s sketch.  I couldn’t seem to get the feet right, and I phoned in the hands because I started to get bored with it.  I really dislike Spider-Man, but I wanted to test my theory.

Anyway, let me know what you think!

Watch out, Spidey! You could poke someone’s eye out with the left knee!  ;-)

Given how quickly I did this and how disinterested I was in it I have to say I think my theory is correct.
